In 2016 the work of Akram Khan will again be inspiring thousands of people across the world, as it did with his work for the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, through his involvement with Big Dance. The renowned dance artist – who has worked with iconic names such as Sylvie Guillem, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Kylie Minogue is creating the choreography for the Big Dance Pledge in 2016.
2016 will mark the tenth and final year of the project which has inspired thousands of people to take part in dance, organised by the Mayor of London and People Dancing (formerly known as the foundation for community dance). Khan is one of the most renowned choreographers of his generation; he will be creating a three minute dance designed for people of all abilities to learn in groups across the world and perform simultaneously on 20 May 2016.
The simultaneous dances will be part of a series of performances. Recently Khan has been working with dance students at Roehampton University to create the resources which will be available to download from 5 January 2016 – including films and written guides – to help participants with the dance or to explore creative ideas and develop their own choreography. Khan will be using the themes of ‘overcoming adversity’ and ‘achievement’ to create the movement and inspire all involved.
The students of Roehampton have been equally inspired, gaining the unique chance to work with such a high-profile dance artist, additionally experiencing the process he goes through to create a high profile performance. While the students will also be taking part in a performance in Trafalgar Square in July – the culmination of the final Big Dance Week – they have found the process to be an intense one, working with one of the biggest choreographers in the UK.
