The secret to success

Two_dancersThe secret to a dancers success is not flexibility, technique, contacts or performance - although a combination of all of these will propel a dancer far - but the icing on the cake is simply confidence. It is what every successful dancer has in common with each other: not being able to execute your technique or performance in the appropriate way will not look anywhere near as good as if the dancer exudes confidence too, wanting to be watched. The audience - or choreographer, judges or panel - then enjoys watching. It's no secret that many dancers are self-deprecating without real reason. Thoughts such as 'I'm not good enough' or 'I'll never be as good as that' are detrimental to both mental and physical performance, and are usually unjustified thoughts. Whilst there are dancers who exude the 'I'm the best' egotistical aura, it is important to strike a modest and healthy balance between the two and conduct yourself well and not develop an ego which is unattractive and forceful. It seems the most important part of self-confidence is not comparing yourself to others. This exercise is rarely positive and can often be mentally damaging as well as being a waste of time! It is important to be true to yourself and your strengths as a dancer. No matter how much you might idolise someone else in the industry, you are two different dancers and only you are the best version of yourself. Putting others on pedestals widely equates to this; their training or experiences do not lessen your value, and equally everyone was where you are at one point. Everyone’s path is different, so value your own training and experiences. Understanding who you are and where you fit in can be one of the most difficult processes a dancer will face, but ultimately leads you on the path to success by being honest with yourself and promoting your strengths. Don't short-change yourself by letting your weaknesses override your strengths. You have skills you have been working hard on your whole career, and just because someone else has different skills this doesn't reduce yours. Remain confident in your accomplishments and you will get there.
